At the beginning of class I collected the pre-revolution essays.

Next, we watched the beginning to a video on the basis of the Declaration of Independence.  In this video Morgan Freeman gave an overview of the Declaration and mentioned a few of its shortcomings.

We then looked at two readings from historian which compared had different interpretations on the Declaration.  Students wrote down claims the authors made about the Declaration, and evidence to support their claims.

Next, we finished the video.  In the video actors read the Declaration, and students followed along using a transcript of the Declaration their textbooks.

Students then analyzed two sections of the Declaration.

First, they read the preamble on a handout.  Using vocabulary words defined below the reading they then wrote a summary of the preamble in their own words.

Second, students analyzed the list of grievances in the Declaration.  They need to find five grievances that are related to taxes, acts, laws, or events leading up to the Revolution that we have discussed in class.  They need to record the grievances on their graphic organizers, then explain the relationship to the tax, act, law, or event in the right-hand column.
